Plastic Bag Free Wanaka
Plastic Bag Free Wanaka and Wastebusters are running the world’s first ever (so far as we know) Waste Free Fair. Join us for a free afternoon of creativity and zero waste fun, showcasing practical ways to upcycle, reuse, avoid single use plastics and reduce waste.
Learn how to make your own:
• Upcycled produce bags
• Honey wraps
• T-shirt bags
• Furoshiki wraps
• Unpackaged nut milks and stock
• Pet beds from old jerseys and cushions
You can also buy some ‘prepared earlier with love’ produce bags and honey wraps, as well as the traditional Plastic Bag Free Wanaka bags and bottles. Local retailers will be selling waste free products and bulk bin produce, plus there will be plenty of stalls with advice, inspiration and prizes.
Plastic Bag Free Wanaka coordinator Sophie Ward said the Waste Free Fair was in response to the massive wave of interest in reducing waste at home. “So many people in Wanaka are making an effort to avoid single use plastics and cut down their packaging, it’s a really exciting time. Plastic Free July gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate all the waste free things that are happening in our community and bring them all together in one place.”
There will be a pledge tree at the Waste Free Fair, to encourage people to try avoiding some kind of single use plastic during July, and an ideas board to swap waste free tips. “Plastic Free July is not about being perfect,” said Sophie. “It’s about learning what changes we can realistically make in our lives that will make us happier as well as reducing the amount of plastic going into the environment.”
